Aliens vs. predator, for some people they are transported back to the '90s to a time of the Jaguar. Others not so far back to some, alright movies. I thought they were alright anyways. But an even fewer number of folks think back to the latest Aliens vs. Predator game, for modern consols.
Well, here we go. Time to dive into another game that wasn't really well recieved.
OVERVIEW
First things first, this game, as far as I can tell, does not have anything to do with the original aliens vs. predator for the Jaguar, but I am not entirely sure. I am pretty sure that it does fit into the aliens vs. predator movies, but once again I cannot be so sure about that, But you don't care, you just want a review of this game, in fact you probably want to here about the Jaguar version, well Tough: I haven't played that one now have I?
This game starts off allowing you to choose between three campaigns, Alien's, Predator's and the campaign of a colonial marine. I would recommend choosing alien's campaign first due to the fact that it takes place before all the other campaigns. I don't really want to spoil anything but you start out the campaigns of each character, and you get taught the basics, there is training for each: Pretty basic stuff. Each of the campaigns interlace in some way as well.
As alien you start out as a little baby alien bursting out of a man's chest, you don't play as the baby alien, sadly. Well, your captors find that you have a lot of fight in you and decide that you are worth studying. You are then seen some time later and you are in a large cage and you are locked up. Once again I do not want to spoil anything, but you eventually escape and wreak havok all over.
As predator you start out in some old ruins and you undertake some training so that you may hunt the "xenomorphs," also known as alien, you are taught basic combat, how to use your weapons, yadda yadda yadda, and you get to fight some of them nasty aliens. The predator story is pretty simple, you are predator, you must hunt and kill. That is pretty much it.
And lastly, there is the marine campaign, which is the simplest of them all. You are on a space colony, aliens are running about and you must kill them. You are just plopped down in some dark room, you have obviously sustained injury, and you are alone... Yay... You have contact with some lady and she tells you what is going on, yadda yadda yadda, aliens, occasional predator, Kill, destroy, pilage, rape.
As you can tell, the story isn't very deep, but it is told well and isn't bad. I would say my one complaint about the campaign is the alien campaign, it is far shorter than the other two and is probably the most enjoyable to play.
GAME PLAY
The game play is pretty darn neat, I think, each of the characters bring a different style of game play. For example, Alien doesn't have any sort of long range weapon, but has very powerful melle attacks, also they are very fast and Agile. But the most outstanding thing about them is that they can crawl on walls and ceilings, pretty smoothly too. Predator on the other hand has a lot of projectiles and also has very powerful meelee attacks, and can go invisible... Sounds broken huh? I'll get to that later. Lastly are the marines, which you can't expect to get something new from them, just your basic find gun, run around, shoot at anything not human.
Now, for the multiplayer aspect of this whole game, which was a big selling point for them. I will say it very bluntly right now, Predator in multiplayer is over powered as hell. For a typical match there are three teams, Team Predator, Team alien, and Team Marine, and everyone wants to be predator, so there will be matches where it is two marines vs. three aliens, and four predators.... It is so annoying. Even when it is three teams of three, predators dominate. The way I see it the teams should be, four aliens, three marines and two predators, no matter what, period. That is the only way the games are balanced. And while I am on personal opinion, I prefer to play as the marines, they are reletively easy to use, and if you are good at it you can do a lot of damage. The multiplayer is pretty cool, but there are some problems with it.
GRAPHICS/MUSIC
This game looks good, that's all I can really say, it really creates a mood with each level. Graphically it oooks really good as well, lot's of detail and it doesn't look plasticy, which is always good. Also, something I really like is the detail in the gore when you kill someone, it's pretty sweet. Lastly is the music, it's ambient what else can I say? It fits the game well but, nothing to get excited about. But, when there are bosses and such, the music picks up to more ochestral music, but once again, not something you will remember forever like mario, or even metroid.
This concludes my review of aliens vs. predator, would I recommend this game? if it were two years ago, I would but since there is a new one coming out and no one plays the old one anyways, I would say try the new one that is coming out.
