To The Moon

I typically like to write about older games. Games that were made in the heyday of the medium, before it became a cashcow that had decisions being made by bearucratic publishers rather than by trained game developers. (not to cast too negative a light on the state of modern gaming) I feel that there's usually more.... Soul. More love, more passion, more tiny details put into the games of old. Little things that don't really contribute to the gameplay at all, but are there just because someone cared about the game enough to throw in a little something extra.

The game we're featuring today, however, is from this century. More notably, this decade! (at time of writing) Even MORE heinous than that, it was released late 2011! (November 1 2011, if I must be precise.)

But you know how it is with these retro-themed games. Some of them manage to capture that ol' classic gaming spirit so well that they could easily go alongside anything made for the SNES, Genesis, DOS or NES or whatever fancy dangle you kids play these days.

So here I am talking about something that's probably even newer than your last haircut. Today's focus is; To The Moon.

Retro of the Week #4 - Alien Soldier

VISUALSHOCK! SPEEDSHOCK! SOUNDSHOCK! NOW IS TIME TO THE 68000 HEART ON FIRE!

I'll start this by saying that while eventually I'll write about specific game companies and the games they've made, Treasure is not one I'll add to that list.

Why? Simple.

I haven't played all of their games, and I'm not likely to. Unless Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes suddenly get a modern port, I'm not likely to play them. (much as I'd like to) Plus, the sheer quality put into each game means that each one deserves their own focus and attention. Each game is so wildly different from each other (in a manner of speaking)] that it'd be so difficult to compare them anyways.

And, I'll get this out of the way: I won't be doing Gunstar Heroes. It has all the modern ports you could need, it's cheap, it's absolutely fantastic, and you don't have a reason NOT to play it.

So, we'll touch on a much lesser-k

Retro of the Week #3

Since I seem to be in some sort of a Genesis kick, let's roll with it. The second-placer in the 16-bit war had a lot going for it, but sadly, a lot of its best happened later in its life, when programmers had managed to work the hardware better. Comix Zone, which I likely won't be reviewing as I kinda suck at it, is almost a prime example of this sort of thing. A late-age Genesis game that woulda turned the tide a bit had it been released but two years earlier. Comix Zone had bright, fresh and fluid graphics around satisfying gameplay and great music and sound. Other than a rather steep difficulty, it was a sparkling gem.

But then, Silpheed is a SegaCD game. Most people didn't have those. You can understand, then, why Silpheed flew under the radar.

Which is a shame, since it's FUCKING AWESOME.

Retro Of The Week #2 - Ranger X

Hey guys! Glad you could make it!
Anyone who knows me knows I love the classics.
I like to rant and rave about the classics.
So I figured I'd start a new series here, to be updated MAYBE every week with a new game featured.
So, let's get started! Up first;
A very very little known Genesis/Megadrive game; Ranger X!
[[CUTOFF]]
The sole release of Gau Entertainment, they put a lot of love and work into making their first title release a wonderful hit. However, it wasn't marketed. Like, at all. Thus, the game didn't sell, Gau folded, and what could have been a great series and company couldn't even get off the ground.

But we're here to talk about the game!

Most platformers have you heading to the right, sometimes shooting along the way, right?

Well, Ranger X does that too. BUT!! It does it differently!

For starters; you can fly!
For limited but lengthy periods.

Retro of The Week #1 - F-Zero

It’s the early 90’s, Sega’s new 16-bit machine is out and making the old NES look bad. Nintendo answers back with the Super Nintendo which comes packed with some sexy features, such as mode 7. At the time racing games pretty much looked like this:

But to show off mode 7, as one of the SNES’s launch titles, Nintendo answers with F-Zero...  Well fuck.

While this was not true 3D, this was still pretty damn impressive to our little minds back in the day. What better way to show off Mode 7 back in the day then the most intense racer we had ever played? This game, literally, set the standard for racing games back in the day, and it was pretty much just a tech demo for mode 7. Toshihiro Nagoshi, president of Sega’s Amusement Vision known for titles like Daytona USA, said that F-Zero "actually taught me what a game should be.” Amusement Vision later went on to make F-Zero GX on Gamecube.
